What If the Life You're Living Is Only the Beginning? An exploration of spiritual initiation, self-discovery, and the ancient path to awakening your highest potential.
Have you ever had a feeling you couldn't quite explain? A quiet voice within you that whispers, There has to be something more.
Maybe your life looks wonderful from the outside. You have a career, relationships, accomplishments, and all the things you once thought would make you happy. Yet something inside you remains restless.
Or perhaps your life looks nothing like you imagined it would. Maybe things feel chaotic, uncertain, or disconnected, and you're wondering how you ended up here.
I know that feeling intimately.
Nearly ten years ago, my life was a far cry from what it is today.
I was a newly transitioned hairstylist working on the salon floor, and while I appeared happy and joyful to the people around me, internally, I was struggling. My life felt chaotic, both inside and out. I was searching for meaning, direction, and something I couldn't quite put into words.
But there was one thing I couldn't ignore.
A persistent inner voice kept telling me:
You're here to do more. You're here to help people.
I didn't know what that meant. I certainly didn't know how to get there.
But eventually, that voice became impossible to ignore.
Searching Everywhere for Answers
Toward the end of a sabbatical year, I began actively searching for answers.
I went to spiritual readers, intuitives, and anyone I thought might be able to offer insight into my life. And every time, I asked essentially the same questions:
Am I on the right path? What is my purpose?
I wanted something tangible. Something real. Something that could help me understand why I was here and what I was meant to do.
But no matter how many readings I received, I never felt like I was getting the answers I was looking for.
So I kept searching.
I explored different religious and spiritual traditions. I read books about angels, studied aspects of Judaism, Buddhism, and Islam, and spent plenty of time wandering through metaphysical shops.
And then there were the crystals.
I like to joke that crystals were my gateway drug into spirituality.
I collected them enthusiastically, fascinated by the possibility that there was an entire unseen world waiting to be explored.
But even with all the books, crystals, readings, and spiritual exploration, something was missing.
I was accumulating information, but I wasn't necessarily finding myself.
I didn't realize it then, but my search was about to take an unexpected turn.
An Invitation I Almost Ignored
Around that time, I kept noticing social media posts from a woman I had known approximately ten years earlier.
We hadn't spoken in a decade, but her posts were consistently uplifting, encouraging, and filled with positivity. I always looked forward to seeing what she shared.
And strangely enough, I kept having this persistent feeling that I needed to reach out to her.
Reach out to her. Reach out to her.
At first, I thought it was ridiculous.
Why would I contact someone I hadn't spoken to in ten years?
But eventually, I followed that inner prompting.
I sent her a message that went something like this:
"Hey, I know this might sound really weird, but I think you're supposed to help me heal in some way. If this is completely out of left field, please feel free to ignore it and have a beautiful life!"
Fortunately, she didn't ignore it.
She welcomed me warmly, and we began working together through acupuncture and herbal medicine.
She was also incredibly intuitive.
And at the end of nearly every session, she would tell me the same thing:
"I keep getting the message that I need to take you to the Mystery School."
The Mystery School?
I remember thinking, What are you talking about? Aren't all the Mystery Schools buried somewhere beneath the sands of Egypt? I've watched Ancient Aliens!
I genuinely didn't understand how a Mystery School could exist in the modern world.
And despite her repeated invitations, I resisted.
The irony is that, at the time, I lived in an apartment complex directly beside the business park where the Mystery School was located.
It was practically in my backyard.
Yet I had no idea that something so significant to my future was waiting just around the corner.
The Moment Everything Changed
Eventually, I agreed to visit.
It was a vision board evening.
Nothing particularly dramatic was planned. We were simply gathering to set intentions, create vision boards, and enjoy an evening together.
But I remember walking into the space and immediately sensing that something was different.
There was a lightness there. A sense of purity and peace that I didn't have the language to describe at the time.
We had tea, met some of the people there, and eventually gathered in the larger temple space.
Before beginning our vision boards, the woman leading the evening guided us through a brief standing meditation.
It was only supposed to last about five minutes.
But within approximately thirty seconds, tears were rolling down my cheeks.
I felt something I had never experienced quite like that before.
I felt as though I had finally found what I had been searching for.
I felt like I was home.
One of the women gently placed her hand on my shoulder, helping me feel grounded in the moment.
And somehow, that simple gesture deepened the experience even further.
I couldn't have explained what was happening to me.
I didn't understand the teachings, the lineage, or the significance of initiation.
But something within me recognized that I wanted to explore this path.
The next day, I returned for a consultation.
And being the kind of woman who tends to believe that more is more, I wanted to do everything immediately!
I scheduled my Life Activation, and that weekend, I attended Empower Thyself, the foundational initiation program offered through the Modern Mystery School.
I had no idea just how profoundly my life was about to change.
What Is Spiritual Initiation?
Throughout history, spiritual seekers have gathered in sacred traditions to explore some of humanity's oldest questions:
Who am I?
Why am I here?
What is my purpose?
What is the nature of God, the universe, and my relationship to both?
Ancient initiatory traditions approached these questions not simply as intellectual exercises, but as mysteries to be explored through direct experience, spiritual discipline, and sacred teachings.
Within the Modern Mystery School tradition, initiation is understood as a sacred energetic process that helps awaken an individual's spiritual potential and establishes a foundation for deeper spiritual development.
It is not simply a ceremony marking membership in an organization.
It is considered the beginning of a profound relationship with oneself, the divine, and the Great Work of spiritual transformation.
This was the distinction that changed everything for me.
Before discovering the Mystery School, I had spent so much time seeking answers outside myself.
I wanted someone to tell me my purpose. I wanted a book, a reading, or a teacher to explain who I was and what I was supposed to do.
But initiation introduced me to a different possibility.
What if the answers I was searching for weren't something another person could simply hand me?
What if I needed to develop the capacity to discover them within myself?
In the Hermetic tradition, the ancient instruction "Know Thyself" is central to spiritual development.
And knowing yourself is so much more than understanding your personality, preferences, or personal history.
It is an invitation to explore the deeper dimensions of your being.
To discover your relationship with the divine.
To recognize your capacity for conscious creation.
And to begin awakening the potential that may have remained dormant beneath years of conditioning, fear, distraction, and limitation.
The Transformation Begins Within
One of the most meaningful changes I experienced after initiation was a shift in how I perceived the world around me.
I began seeing people differently.
My mother was no longer simply my mother. I began recognizing the divine within her.
My friends, romantic partners, and even people with whom I disagreed became opportunities to practice seeing beyond personality and behavior.
I began asking myself:
Can I recognize God in this person, even when I don't agree with them?
That doesn't mean it was always easy.
It certainly doesn't mean it's always easy today!
But the possibility of seeing divinity in others changed the way I approached relationships.
My relationship with God deepened. My connection with Jesus, the angels, and the spiritual world became more personal and meaningful.
Rather than simply reading about spiritual connection, I was learning practices that helped me cultivate it through my own experience.
I also began developing a different relationship with my thoughts and emotions.
Where I had previously been more reactive, I gradually developed a greater capacity to pause, reflect, and take responsibility for my responses.
And perhaps most importantly, I began developing a stronger sense of internal order.
I've always appreciated a clean, beautiful, organized environment. I've always liked things in their proper place.
But before initiation, my internal world didn't necessarily reflect that same sense of harmony.
Through years of spiritual practice, study, self-examination, and dedication, I began cultivating more structure within myself.
And over time, that internal transformation began finding expression in my external life.
Not because everything suddenly became perfect.
But because I was changing how I participated in my own life.
Initiation Is the Beginning, Not the Destination
One of the greatest misconceptions about spiritual transformation is that there must be some single experience that changes everything forever.
One meditation.
One healing session.
One ceremony.
One extraordinary moment of enlightenment.
But genuine spiritual development asks something more of us.
In the Mystery School tradition, we often refer to this process as the Great Work.
And it is called work for a reason.
Initiation may open a door, but we must choose to walk through it.
We must be willing to examine our patterns, take responsibility for our choices, develop discipline, and continue showing up for our own growth.
Sometimes that process is beautiful and expansive.
Other times, it asks us to confront aspects of ourselves we would rather avoid.
And that's part of the journey.
We live in a world where almost everything is designed for immediate gratification.
We can order food, access information, entertain ourselves, and receive answers to countless questions with a few taps on a screen.
But wisdom isn't necessarily something we can download.
Self-mastery isn't something we can purchase with a single click.
And spiritual maturity isn't something another person can develop on our behalf.
The most meaningful transformations I've witnessed, both in my own life and in my work with students, have come through consistent participation in the process.
Through practice.
Through commitment.
Through the willingness to keep going even when the work becomes uncomfortable.
The path isn't about escaping the human experience. It's about learning to engage with it more consciously.
Nearly Ten Years Later: Finding God's Grace in the Darkness
As I approach the tenth anniversary of my first initiation, I sometimes reflect on the woman I was when I first walked through those temple doors.
She was searching.
She was struggling.
She had a deep desire to help others, but she didn't know how to turn that desire into a meaningful life.
Today, I have the privilege of serving as a Spiritual Guide, healer, and teacher.
I help others begin their own journeys of spiritual discovery through the teachings and practices of the Modern Mystery School.
And perhaps the most extraordinary part of this journey isn't the knowledge I've gained or the experiences I've had.
It's the person I'm continually becoming.
I've developed a deeper relationship with God, a greater capacity for self-responsibility, and a stronger desire to serve others with love, compassion, and grace.
I still experience challenges.
I still have moments when I react rather than respond.
I still encounter aspects of myself that need attention, healing, and growth.
But I have a foundation to return to.
And perhaps one of the greatest gifts this path has given me is the ability to recognize God's grace, even in the darkest moments of my life.
There was a time when I might have believed that spiritual growth meant eventually reaching a place where life became easier, where suffering diminished, and where everything finally fell into place.
But what I've discovered is something far more meaningful.
The Light doesn't disappear when life becomes difficult.
Sometimes it is in our most vulnerable moments, when we're confronted with grief, uncertainty, or circumstances beyond our control, that we become most aware of the presence of God.
I've learned that joy and sorrow can exist together.
That gratitude can live alongside grief.
That even when I cannot change what is happening around me, I can choose how I meet it.
And in those moments, I find myself returning to the same truth again and again:
The purpose of the path isn't to escape the darkness. It's to become someone who knows how to find the Light within it.
This understanding has profoundly influenced the way I serve others.
When someone comes to me during a difficult season of life, I don't believe my responsibility is to convince them that everything is wonderful or that their suffering isn't real.
I want to meet them with compassion, help them recognize their own strength, and create space for them to discover what is possible.
Sometimes that means offering encouragement.
Sometimes it means lovingly helping someone recognize a blind spot.
And sometimes it simply means holding space while they find their own way forward.
The same woman who once searched desperately for someone to tell her what her purpose was now spends her life helping others explore that very question.
And what I most want people to discover is this:
You are not simply someone searching for the answers. You are an essential part of the mystery you're seeking to understand.
You are a universe within a person.
And there may be far more waiting to be discovered within you than you ever imagined.
What If There's More to You?
Maybe you've felt it too.
That persistent inner knowing that you're here for something more.
Maybe you've spent years searching through books, spiritual practices, different philosophies, or conversations with people you hoped could provide answers.
Maybe your life looks successful on the outside, but something within you remains unfulfilled.
Or maybe you're standing in the middle of circumstances you never imagined for yourself, wondering whether your life could ever become something different.
I can't tell you exactly what initiation would mean for you.
Your journey will be your own.
But I can tell you that nearly ten years ago, I walked into a room for a simple vision board evening and discovered the beginning of a path that would profoundly influence the direction of my life.
And I often wonder what might have happened if I had continued ignoring that quiet voice within me.
The one that kept saying:
There's something more.
Perhaps that voice is speaking to you, too.
Perhaps the curiosity you're feeling isn't something to dismiss.
Perhaps it's worth exploring.
Because what if the person you are today is only the beginning of who you have the potential to become?
What if the answers you've been searching for are inviting you to begin the journey of knowing yourself?
And what if the life you're living is only the beginning?
